A hack by ROMulus

Patch to Super Mario Bros. w/out Title Screen

Versions:
0.50
All of planned Palettes, Graphics, and Text changed.
0.52
Special Trial Version of Luigi's First Quest- The Search for Mario. In this you get a taste
of what's to come.
-First level is altered and is previewing the difficulty I plan for this hack.
-Added Jumping Movement Features to Goombas/Penguins, Mushrooms, Turtles, Beetles etc.
0.5675
Since I will not be hacking as often as I once thought (got a new Playstation, now I can play
RPG's again!), I will release each new version as every 4 levels are completed.
-Levels 1-1 to 1-4 (yes, I did the castle!)
In the castle, there is a backround that shouldn't be there. I can't fix this, just deal with
it.
0.60
A graphics overhaul. After some criticism from Omniverse's newest Mario Hacking webpage, I
decided to do something about it! The overall look is MUCH nicer now. No new levels
however. Palette was altered a tiny bit too.
0.65
Oh my god! I finally made some new levels for this game! Anyway, worlds 2-1 to 2-4 have been
altered. Enjoy! Oh yeah, after you complete 2-3, a weird symbol will overlap the 4 in 2-4,
pay it no heed, it disappears after you complete the Dungeon.

Information on the game:

Story: Everyone's favorite plumber Luigi(at least in my mind), now gets to star in a GOOD game
of his own. No stupid educational games, this is an action packed game in which Luigi is
the main star. Mario deserves a taste of his own medicine after Luigi wasn't in Super
Mario 64. Anyway, here goes the story:

One day Luigi decides that it is time to confront his brother on how come he wasn't in
Super Mario 64, among other games. He reaches his house, to find it has been broken
into! Inside, Luigi finds a note that reads:

               To whomever this may concern,

Mwa ha ha! I have taken Mario to my dungeon of despair! Whoever is reading this,
rescue him, if you dare! Mwa ha ha!

                  Sincerely,
                      Bowser, King of the Koopas

"Great! Just great!" yelled Luigi as he read the letter aloud, "Now I have to rescue
my fat brother just to ask him why I wasn't in Super Mario 64! I shouldn't rescue him,
but I have too, just to ask him the question!"

Luigi looked at the letter again. "What's this?" Luigi thought as he read the Post
       Script.

P.S. I have kidnapped Toad and all his brothers too!

"Oh no!" Luigi exclaimed, "Toad and his brothers are also in trouble! I HAVE to rescue
them! Then, if I feel like it, I'll find Mario too!"

Luigi put the note in his over-all pocket and ran out in search of Toad and his missing
       brothers... and possibly Mario! (he-he-he)

Gameplay: This is the first Super Mario Brothers game, but with a couple of additions of well!
The basic idea is to stomp everything in sight and to find powerup mushrooms and
powerup turnups (taking place of fire flowers) to help you combat Bowser's evil
minions. You must realize that this game is MUCH more difficult than Super Mario
Brothers! You can't pin down the B button and race through and expect to win! This
game now will take patience and some thinking. There are more hidden blocks (some
you MUST find to progress) and gaps are larger, and the enemies are numerious and
difficult. I test EACH and EVERY level to make sure that you can get through it, big
or small. If you jump and hit the ceiling, causing you to fall in a pit, next time,
don't jump so high, or master the duck-jumping technique! The duck-jumping technique
is where you have a running start, and you duck RIGHT before you jump, so you jump as
you duck. This technique could be helpful, so master it early on.

A new thing to this game is the climbing rope. I think the data that produces the
climbing was used only for the flags, but now it has been transfered so you can climb
in real-time! Just jump on the rope, and Luigi automatically grabs it. Press up and
down to climb it, and hold left or right to get off on that respective side. It's
really easy to do, and makes the game have more depth!

Graphics: I tinkered with the Hex Language (the language video games are coded in) and was able
to add extra Eye Candy to this game. First off, the palette is changed, making for
new colors. The Underground and Castle stages have different backround colors, and
it makes the stage look REALLY cool. Second, I was able to assign different graphics
to some things that use the same graphics twice, such as the power-up mushroom and the
1-up mushroom. They both have a different graphics now! Also, bumps now appear after
little Luigi hits a breakable block. It just adds to the realism. Other things are
that Luigi completely faces front instead of his head faces front, and his body faces
us. The ducking graphic is more refined, and other things are there that any person
          who likes graphics will appreciate!

Tools used: I used many different tools when I produced this hack. Here is a list of them (in
            no specific order)

Hexposure- Love this program so much! Thank you Snowbro (made this program), THANK YOU, THANK
YOU, THANK YOU! I used it to:
-Alter graphic combinations
-Change text
-Create a Title Screen
-Alter palette
There is probably more I could have done, but so far, thanks to this versatile program, the game
is what it is now!

YY Map Editor(for Super Mario Bros. 1)- Another program that is good enough to have money charged
for it! Allows practically COMPLETE level changing on
either version of Mario! Out-does Mario Improvement in
so many ways. Allows baddie editing is just one of them!
So you Mario Improvment users, stop using that and use
this Windows 95/98 based program, you won't regret it!

NESticle Version X.XX- Huh? Did I put this? Yes I did. For finding out Hex values so I could
create tables for text editing, Hex values for graphic combination editing,
and for finding Hex values for palette editing, this emulator allows it!
Without Nesticle, the palettes probably wouldn't have changed and the
graphics would be absolutly horrible looking! Not to mention, Luigi would
be called Mario (because I used NESticle to make my table!)!

SNES Tool- Used for creating my .IPS files. Thanks to this my downloads on my webpage are legal!
Plus, they take up less room!

Tile Layer- Snowbro does it again! Allowed Double file editing, so I could cut and paste Mario
2 (US version), and Mario 3 graphics into my hack! This is one versatile program!
The only drawback is it is DOS based, but who's complaining!?

Special Thanks:
To the maker(s) of Super Mario Remix. Whoever you are, you inspired me to make a difficult hack
based on some character not named Mario!

Nintendo- For making such great games!

Snowbro- For your great software!

To the other hackers- It's nice to know that there are people out there who understand what your
saying (my family doesn't)!

The maker of YY Map Editor- Keep it up with the good work!

The maker of NESticle- Great Emulator! Keep improving it!

The hackers of Mario MCB (MCBee made this one), Super Luigi Bros. (so my idea wasn't the first),
Mario2k, and Super Mario Remix (again). I borrowed some of the graphics in your hacks. Sorry
if it angers you but it makes the game look great thanks to your great graphic art skills.
I couldn't have done an overhaul on my game's graphics without your indirect help
(you didn't volunteer, that makes it indirect). Thank you!

And to everyone who has played my hacks!
